School Garden/Eco School

A very special evening was recently held to develop the school garden. Many parents and friends of the school, school staff and pupils came to start on the work of digging and weeding the garden. A section of the Junior Department playground has already been developed with Year 4 ‘pollination’ project as well as their Creative work done jointly with the Arts Council. We also wish to thank Mr Emyr Jones for his hard work constructing a fence in the garden and advising the school on gardening issues. Local companies have also generously contributed towards the cause including Pete’s Eats and Spar Llanberis. Mrs Anna Williamd of the North Wales Wildlife Trust has also been of great support in advising the school on various issues and obtaining funds in the form of grants etc.

Caer Gylchu

Year 2 pupils recently went on a special visit to Gaergylchu as part of their studies. They received a special welcome and wished to share their experiences on their return. They have learnt a great deal about recycling and its effect on the environment.

Eco Schools

A special presentation was given to year 4 parents recently in order to show the hard work achieved by year 4 with their pollination and Creative schools project. The parents were shown the developments in the garden and also equipment and materials bought using funds obtained by grants from local companies such as Pete’s Eats and Spar.
We also wish to thank very hardworking parents for giving up their time in developing aspects of the garden.

The Gold Award
We have been awarded the bronze and silver award and are now striving to achieve the gold award!

What is the Eco-Schools Scheme?
The Gwynedd and Môn Eco-Schools Scheme is a unique and innovative scheme to protect the local and global environment. The scheme consists of three stages of accreditation namely bronze, silver and gold and the school will receive a certificate and award if it achieves success.
The main objective of the scheme is to provide a framework in order to assist schools to adopt policies and activities that will protect the environment as a core aspect of the school’s daily life.

A charter will be displayed at a central location at the school that will display the objectives and guidelines. The eco group will hold termly meetings to discuss all the school’s eco issues.

Here are some of the things that we intend to do this year; -
• reduce the school’s energy use – use the ’OWL’ equipment to monitor electricity use at the school
• continue to re-cycle
• run an exchange shop
• monitor the weather at Llanberis
• study the area’s wild life
• planting
• encourage children to walk on foot instead of using a car
• fund-raising towards a good cause
